Based on what we learnt in previous seasons, shattering a gem doesn’t kill it. It breaks the gem into fragments, but leaves the gem sentient. It is left forever trying to become whole again, and never being able to. These gem shards are sentient enough to be used as drone soldiers, and can take basic orders.
